Summary: Crash while using Wirecast - Possibly Rendezvous related
Description:

I was doing a test today, with the specific intent of replicating a crash that happened during my last use of the beta. Immediately before the crash, the following things were happening:

I did a regular pre-broadcast startup routine that I've done for a long time. Two guests connected via rendezvous. All OK.

  • Rendezvous audio input was from my mic.
  • Rendezvous video was from my camera.

I had a fair bit of spare time before my intended start time, so I was replicating and re-testing a known bug. I want to get my remote rendezvous guests to confirm if an audio effect applied in the audio mixer would reach them or if it was only live to air. The goal is to have them hear the same as my audience. I did the following.

  • Update audio mixer and apply additional effect - delay.
  • Change rendezvous audio to live output
  • Change shot from screen capture to a composited virtual set
  • Crash - This was a cut transition if that helps.

Summary: 13.2 Beta 2 - Rendezvous Audio Fade not working
Description:

When fading audio sources using the audio mixer, remote rendezvous guests stop hearing the source, after only a minute amount of fade. The screen capture video attached demonstrates this bug. It should be noted that my audio source is Dante VIA. However, I have seen this on other sources at times.

NOTE: This is not new or specific to the beta. However, it is rendezvous related and I am aware you have that part of the code open for other matters. Posting here in the hope you can find and fix this long standing problem.

Summary: Live audio input to Rendezvous - Effects ignored
Description:

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Setup a new document.
  2. Add an audio source. (I am using a USB connected Rode NT-USB microphone).
  3. Send that shot live.
  4. Create a Rendezvous session, and set the audio input to “Live output”, and turn off all other checkmarks.
  5. Have someone connect to rendezvous.
  6. Open the Audio Mixer using command-u (on a mac)
  7. Add the "Delay" effect in the audio mixer.

Expected result: Remote rendezvous guest hears the effect, just like remote audience.

Actual result: Remote rendezvous guest still hears unprocessed audio from the microphone with no delay effect.

Summary: Alpha Channel High CPU load
Description:

After upgrading to Wirecast 10, the use of ProRes video with alpha channels for graphics overlays is causing significant CPU utilisation. This behaviour is new in Wirecast 10, and was not a problem with Wirecast 9. Impact: Existing graphics overlays that previously worked without any problems cause so much additional load that streaming and/or recording fails. This bug was initially reported in 0000029 - however, that issue is mainly focussed on the Rendezvous impact. This issue is also observed in the video.

Perhaps this is best dealt with by limiting clock fonts to mono-spaced fonts. If we align right, that will just move the problems to the left characters. Only mono-space will fix this - unless clock components are individually spaced, which would be a lot of work for this feature.

Summary: ISO Recording of Screen Capture - Black Box Recorder
Description:

In a perfect world, black boxes would never be required. In aviation, the impact of a disaster justifies having a "black box recorder" that will allow replay of the last moments before a crash.

With Wirecast, we have the support info files. But many times, we are asked by support "What was the last thing you did before the crash". Wouldn't it be great if there was an option (especially when working with beta versions) to enable screen recording to disk.

As I started to think about this, I first was thinking of an external app to do the recording. But the challenge is that this takes up more CPU and memory. And its an extra step before starting wirecast that could conflict. Could it be done in Wirecast.

Then, I thought what about setting up a screen recording as an input source, and sending to an ISO recording, together with an audio input. That would do exactly what I wanted. But there was one issue. Screen capture is not available as an input to ISO recording. So, this is my feature request.

Steps To Reproduce:
Additional Information:

As a Wirecast user, I want to do ISO recordings from a screen capture input, so that I can have a forensic recording of what happened on my system immediately before a Wirecast crash which will assist in finding the root cause of bugs which impact my use of Wirecast.

It looks like there is a shadow that is being added to some of the layers for several of the transition types. This shadow is impacting the colour and transparency of the content resulting in drastic colour changes during a transition.

Summary: Rendezvous Codec and processing options
Description:

Rendezvous provides a method to allow remote participants to join a broadcast. One potential use case is to allow musicians to collaborate. However, Rendezvous audio codec and processing capabilities are inadequate to meet the needs for this use case.
To fix the problem, it has been proposed to use the OPUS codec, and to allow disabling of echo suppression and other processing to allow a raw clean audio feed to be used as an input to Rendezvous. This would cater for this use case, as well as allow improved audio for non music use cases.

As a Wirecast user wanting to broadcast live music from Rendezvous connected participants, I want the audio capabilities of Rendezvous to be improved by enabling the OPUS codec, and allowing disabling of "audio processing" options in webrtc, such as echo suppression so that I can get high quality audio into Wirecast for music broadcast.

Summary: Rendezvous Excessive CPU Load
Description:

Please find below full details on this bug.

Environment:

  • MAC, running OSX High Sierra
  • Wirecast 10.0 Release version

Instructions to replicate:

  1. Start wirecast
  2. Reset preferences (to eliminate variables)
  3. Restart wirecast
  4. Open "Activity Monitor" and make a note of baseline CPU load and GPU usage
  5. Start with a new document
  6. Create a single shot with an input media file.
  7. Send the shot "live"
  8. Make a note of updated CPU usage and GPU usage.
  9. Open the "Rendezvous dashboard", and set the dashboard input to "Live output from untitled"
  10. Make a note of the updated CPU usage and GPU usage.

My results: Wirecast behaved as expected up to step 8. When reviewing the CPU/GPU usage after opening the Rendezvous dashboard, it was noted that there was no increase in GPU usage, but the CPU usage doubled. Close the Rendezvous dashboard, and CPU usage returns to expected levels, and GPU usage is unchanged. Note: This was with a single simple source. When using more complex sources, the load and impact is much higher.

My conclusions: The display of the program out in the Rendezvous dashboard on screen is CPU bound without using GPU, and using significant resources to display on screen. There are valid reasons to have the Rendezvous window open during broadcast. If there is no way to offload this to GPU, we should at least be able to disable the program display to save CPU cycles, since we can see it elsewhere on our screen in the main Wirecast application.

Via support, I was told: “Another interesting thing to note is that simply closing the Rendezvous Dashboard will also lower the CPU usage significantly. This is an area of concern and will be looked at internally."

This bug is still present in Wirecast V12. In fact, I was doing a stream the other day. When I had the rendezvous dashboard open, the dropped frames were incrementing, and CPU was high. This was even though I was using apple hardware encoding… so there should not have been significant impact on CPU.

I hope there will be an update on this bug in the near future.

Summary: Configurable Audio Fader Allocation
Description:

When Wirecast was first released, the USB audio mixer served its purpose. Later, Midi controller support was added. However, it is basically useless. When looking at a physical board, it is not possible to know which audio source is assigned to which fader - nor is it possible to pre configure which audio source will use which fader. This is a requirement. Against each audio source, we need an option to specify which fader on the USB mixer will be used for that source. Each fader should only allow one source to be allocated. SOME sources do NOT require a fader, yet they still consume a slot. It would be good to disable the use of the audio mixer for those shots. For example: An audio clip where the audio is muted in the shot profile.

Summary: Font Variants that are not Bold / Italic don't display correctly
Description:

Any font variant other than bold or italic result in the normal font-face of that family being shown. This is a considerable issue since most brand identities and guidelines require things like condensed, light or semi-bolds for sub-header content or secondary text elements and this cannot currently be done in any dynamic text overlays.

Summary: API Expansion
Description:

The API in its current form is missing many components. There is no ability to script actions associated with rendezvous for example. One use case would be to bring in guests to multiple shots which is currently a very manual process. Ideally, the API capabilities should allow "recording" into AppleScript for all wirecast functionality.

Summary: UV Mapping - Virtual Sets
Description:

Your virtual set capability is missing an essential element. To get a video element to appear behind an alpha layer television, is harder to do than solve a rubix cube. The people at virtualsetworks advise “most systems we do it with uv maps so we are just waiting for telestream to implement this”.

There is another reason why this particular technique would be helpful. In addition to putting video on a TV screen, there is also reflections. UV mapping could also be used to map a reflection of a TV onto other surfaces that are not 100% flat within a virtual set.

Any chance you could implement this to help make the virtual sets easier to use?

Summary: Loopback Video Elements
Description:

Particularly when doing chromakey and other complex use of virtual sets, maintaining each reference to an input source can be complex. What would be helpful is to have a “virtual layer” where you can define one or more input elements - and setup things like chromakey, crop, etc. Then, this element could be used in multiple shots elsewhere - without the need to reconfigure crop and chromakey each time.

Inputs

Steps To Reproduce:
Additional Information:

As a wirecast user, I want to have a layer where I can compose shots which can be re-used elsewhere in my document so that I can make changes in one place, with that input to be re-used in multiple other places in my document. For example: A virtual set built up could appear at different zoom levels elsewhere in the document.

As a wirecast user, I want to be able to configure audio within the input layer to allow assignment to mixer channels, to fix the other problem with random assignment.

As a wirecast user, I want to be able to assign effects within the mixer where inputs are pre-mapped to the audio mixer, even if the shot is not live.

Summary: Video Input Scaling is not correctly handled
Description:

First time input is placed on canvas / shot list, the video uses a low resolution and is scaled to that low dimension upon loading. This means that 1080 and 720 video sources (which let's be honest, we're all using) are ALWAYS needing to be scaled. This seems completely like a stupid thing we're all doing simply because that is what the software is defaulting too but can easily be changed (like the default canvas size). (See first youtube video) A more recent case occurred when swapping to a different source (NDI to SDI) resulted in the video being scaled by 400%. (See second youtube video)

Summary: Move corners of objects independently
Description:

Allowing media to fit in the correct locations in virtual sets is almost impossible in Wirecast. Draging individual corners is not supported. You have to calculate X, Y, an Z angles by guess work - but it ie easier to solve the rubix cube. This would be fixed by supporting UV scaling... but if this is not possible, bring back the feature in earlier versions of wirecast that allowed manipulating individual corner elements to get your media to fit in the places in a virtual set.

Wirecast currently allows a stream URL to be specified to PULL RTMP media. Many camera sources (drones for example) can send to a RTMP destination URL. Wirecast does not support this functionality. In testing, the use of nginx as a proxy has proven effective. However, it would be helpful if this could be built into wirecast.

This will be much helpful for web news broadcasters like us. Recently we did a 16 hour livestream from our newsroom and even after owning LiveU Solo devices, we couldn’t get our reporters get connected to our studio directly via Wirecast as it lacks the feature for some kind of a mini RTMP/RTMPS server. This feature, if introduced, will be much appreciated by many digital news broadcasters like us.

Summary: Dedicated audio input interface
Description:

Up until version 6 came out, there was an ability to set an global input for audio where no-matter what shot composition or arrangement you had, you were only ever using the interface plus whatever each of the shots added. For most events, I'm finding that I lose a complete layer simply because I dedicate the bottom most one to a single audio interface input now. With the audio re-build that happened a few versions ago, and the audio mixer available, it would seemingly be easy to add a universal input like an external mixer.

Received an email back from support stating that I have already made this request over a year ago and at the time it was discussed so far as it was stated that it wouldn't be done:
"It appears you submitted the same request roughly a year ago, and after considering adding such a feature, our development team chose not to pursue it. "

There has been a bit of discussion about licensing and the new media library. What would be very cool is a “wizard” that can produce license text that can go in the description of a video, complete with a one-time “key” in a hyperlink that will allow Youtube to click the link, and to get access to the list of content that was validly licensed. Make it easy and fast to handle dispute resolution. In the future, it may be possible for youtube to automatically poll this API to prevent copyright strikes.

Summary: Missing item - Configurable display (Part 2)
Description:

This item was previously resolved by Telestream with a global configuration option. While that is better than nothing, the initial request and subsequent comments suggest that per shot configuration is also a desirable outcome. Existing notes cloned into this new issue.

During a broadcast, there is nothing more annoying than a big red question mark sitting where a rendezvous guest was previously located, or in place of NDI sources. What would be good is to configure the action that should happen when a source is missing. I suggest three options configurable per shot:

  1. Display nothing - Make whatever was there disappear.
  2. Display something - a logo or other static image to replace the missing source
  3. Replace with placeholder - If it is a placeholder item, revert the item back to its default placeholder settings - letter A, B, or C respectively.

Why make it configurable per shot?

  1. An NDI source that is full screen on layer one going to a ? will cover ALL other layers. That is bad. This should display nothing.
  2. A local studio input that is not a template should be replaced with a test pattern or some other static logo.
  3. To make life easy for placeholders, it might be nice to replace with original placeholder as an option.

https://telestreamforum.forumbee.com/t/18bagm/support-lacks
this needs to be fixed! acutally this is not an idea. It's more a bug or close to what I call a crash in making livestreaming.

Mark Hildebrandt said:

just tested the auto live. Even if it goes live automatic when getting the connection back to the rendezvous cam (which it actually doesn't...) then how can anyone professionals live with a questionmark in a livestrem if connection is lost? That's really to make us like stupid animal, if Telestream thinks that's good enough for us. After all, the application cost 1000$ right?.... This HAS to get fixed in some way. First with removeing that big red questionmark. What about making a function which allow us to decide what's coming up, if you can't fix that the signal goes live when it comes back, which I actually don't understand why you can't fix. It's just making a special rule for the rendezvous source that this has to be live always, when set in program/live.

Interesting, I have a similar bug in place. Here's the video I made of a VERY repeatable way of showcasing it too.

Interestingly, reconnected sources do correct themselves in the preview pane but NOT in the live view.

Can I bump this up. During a live broadcast Titler Live just died and as I always have that layer open live it did this https://youtu.be/XSiMTGwXenQ?t=5900
There was no title due to be shown but this has ruined a live event.
My suggestion is just show nothing in the live window but show a ? in the Thumbnails or make the thumbnail as faulty, the same could be extended to show if another std source is not feeding.

Thanks

Leo

This feature should be obvious. Almost a deal-breaker. If I saw other software with the features I like in wirecast, but it didn't have a big red question mark, I would consider switching to that software.

I was told to make a strong case for this feature, so here it is:

  1. This is the only feature in all of Wirecast that forces a creative decision upon the producer.
  2. Wirecast lets the producer have the control in all other ways.. except this one.
  3. Producers are left with zero creative options when a source drops.
  4. "Complete creative control, except in one way." is not a very good selling point.
  5. I feel it is an obvious UI/UX miss, and the creative decision to broadcast a giant red question mark is very hard to understand or defend.

Summary: Dynamic CDN API
Description:

I was looking at past discussions on the topic of API interfaces to the various CDN's. One of the common issues with past versions of Wirecast is where CDN's update their API's, and things break with past versions of Wirecast.

With Wirecast version 10, there is a solution to that problem... for a price. If using ReStream, Wirecast will do all of the API calls VIA Telestream. This would allow fixes to be applied in the cloud should CDN's change their API specifications, without the need to update Wirecast.

But why limit this to ReStream usage? How about proxying all API calls via Telestream's service by default... De-couple the ReStream function from the API function... allowing just the API calls to happen in the cloud. Next time Facebook change their API, a single code change in the cloud could fix the problem for all clients, without needing any software updates.

This was previously reported to Telestream some time back. However, I now have embed enabled, and can no longer test. There is a new report of this in the telestream forums with Wirecast 10, so this is not yet resolved.

This would require a new YouTube account, so I am unable to test. Unknown if this is fixed in 11.0b1 - however, we know it was still broken in Wirecast 10

Summary: Default canvas size always 720p even on higher powered machines
Description:

The canvas defaults to 720p and there is no way to adjust this. Requiring a quick setup can cause issues with forgetting to update this as well as 1080 inputs placed on the canvas prior to canvas changes require scaling. Either the default variant / configuration requirements for 1080 need to be adjusted or a manner in which we can save a default size should be added.
